Last time I checked, we don't have a lot of songs that feature the cowbell
It was the Gonzaga equivalent of a muslim who hasn't completed the Hajj. Before Thursday night, I hadn't been to Jack & Dan's Tavern in Spokane. And upon arrival, I looked forward to paying my respects to - in my case - Adam Morrison).
I pictured a night of trading heartwarming Morrison-related anecdotes with strangers and generally bathing in the glory that is the nation's leading scorer. However, a lightning poll of pub-goers revealed the Adam Morrison is not the BMOC we all take him to be.
Based an several quick conversations with some Gonzaga students in the bar, I discovered a laundry list of axes people are grinding with Adam. They ranged from "he needs to shave that marmot on his face" to "Adam Morrison will go to the NBA because he needs a tutor for math 110 and is flunking out of college ". One guy started in on how the admission standards of the school are dropping because of the basketball program's popularity and Adam Morrison is the poster child for that. But not one person I talked to liked Adam Morrison or would give him credit for anything else other than being a good basketball player. Shocking.
I've been fighting hard these past couple days to reconcile these accusations with my staunchly -held belief in his infallibility. Why would his fellow students - the one's who are at every game cheering him on - throw him under the bus like this? And I believe I've found the solution:
It's Jealousy. It must be jealousy. These are the people commonly referred to as "haters". These are the people who are overcome during the Fox "Behind the Glory" programs. I refuse to believe that someone who is good at basketball can be a bad person. That would destroy my worldview.
Insightful quote from Dave Chapelle on Oprah last night: Success takes you where integrity can't protect you (or something along those lines). I for one am happy to see him back.
Only 21 hours until Super Bowl XL
