All-Time Zags vs. All-Time Dawgs

Rosters: 12 players, 3 coaches, 2 announcers, one "wild card"

Eligibility: All former players eligible. In the event of a transfer, player eligible for transfer destination. i.e. Erroll Knight and Dan Dickau eligible for Gonzaga.

Format: Best-of-seven series. Games 1, 4, and 5 in the old Kennel; Games 2,3,6 in Bank of America Arena, game 7 in Key Arena (if necessary).

Who wins?

Gonzaga

Starters: Dan Dickau, Richie Frahm, John Stockton, Adam Morrison, Casey Cavalry.

Bench: Matt Santangelo, Blake Stepp, Cory Violette, Jeff Brown, Bakari Hendrix, Paul Rogers, Ronny Turiaf.

Coaches: Dan Fitzgerald (head coach), Mark Few, Dan Monson

Wild Card: Kennel Club

Announcers: Bud Nameck and Jeff Brown

Comments: You gotta have your best players on the floor, so Casey Cavalry edges out Erroll Knight, Mike Nilson, Mark Spink, and Anthony Reason as the hard-working defensive stopper. Hard to find room at Guard U. for some noticeable omissions, including Q. Hall, John Rillie, and Ryan Floyd. Paul Rogers included to defend opposing center - in this case Todd MacCulloch. Turiaf available off the bench to provide much-needed energy and defense.

Washington

Starters: Nate Robinson, Brandon Roy, (Hard-Working) Bobby Jones Jr., Detlef Schrempf, Todd MacCulloch

Bench: Will Conroy, Christian Welp, Donald Watts, Deon Luton, Tre Simmons, Doug Wrenn, Steve Hawes.

Coaches: Lorenzo Romar (head coach), Clarence "Hec" Edmundson, Marv Harshman.

Announcers: Bob Rondeau and Marques Johnson (Garfield High School - Yakaaa!!!!)

Wild Card: Travis Duty

Comments: Lorenzo Romar on the cusp of making this team as a player. First player selected to the starting five: HWBJ. Possibly the best glue guy in the history of college basketball. Doug Wrenn, while a quality player, could never beat Gonzaga when it mattered and is thus was the last player selected. All other players from the Dark Ages (Curtis Allen, C.J. Massingale, Jeffrey Day, etc.) not included.

How would this series play out? Comments encouraged. No cussing.

Any Husky all-time team needs to include Chester Dorsey (also known as Chet the Jet, the man who denied me a job at his car-washing/detailing establishment) as well as the fabulous center James Edwards. This actually would be a very even match-up. The thing that would swing this in favor of UW is the 29-13 alltime lead in head-to-head matchups. So shut up.

Zags win... and it'd go a little something like this.

The Huskies in bound the ball with 12 seconds left, and Nate Robinson quickly takes an ill advised three pointer, which rims in and out. Detlef comes down with a big rebound and put back to regain the lead for the U of W. Time out Zags. Score is UW 91, GU 90.

With 6.5 seconds left Richie Frahm inbounds the ball to Adam Morrison at half court. Morrison quickly drives to his right, and is doubled teamed by Brandon Roy and Bobby Jones. He then does the unthinkable and kicks the ball out to a wide open Dan Dickau who nails a 25 footer at the buzzer to carry the Zags to victory.

Meanwhile Senque Carry and Bob Bender watch from the stands and wonder how Danny got to be such a good shooter.

You also forgot NBA legend Eldridge Recasner, I think he may make the Husky squad over Hot Shootin' Deon Luton. I cannot believe how little research you have done, I guess that is why you think the Zags can win.

There is no way that Donald Watts, Dion Luton or Doug Wren make this team. Not including "the Captain" Eldridge Racasner smacks of a lack of Pre 1990 Husky basketball knowledge. Also, as much as I love him, Bobby Jones does not start either, Chris Welp at 4, Tod Mac at 5. And I am sure Tim Austin would have something to say about this....

This is a good start, but it needs some work. Watts is out, and we get Dickau for 1/4 of the game. Although come to think of it, he wouldn't make the All-time Husky team. Huskies left out and worthy of considertaion: Houbregs, Edwards, Dorsey and two of my all-time favorites Clarence Ramsey and Charles Dudley. As regards Gonzaga, once you come up with the all time time team, there's not much left over for the second team or honorable mention, except for maybe Bing Crosby. For your next project, how about a comparison of Huskies vs. Zags with NBA championship rings?

I am also not too sure about your wild card choice for the Huskies. I love Travis Duty as much as the next guy, but don't you think that Jim Caviezel brings a little bit more to the wild card role? I mean the guy is Jesus Christ your savior.

Frank Burgess for the Zags? All-American, averaged 30 ppg for his CAREER, had a 40 foot jump shot in the pre 3pt era. He HAS to be there!

Somewhat sarcastic quote posted on DAWGMAN hoops forum. I apologize for linking you blog, but I want to see a good ol' fashioned hatefest.

"Not sure why he's wasting his time playing the Huskies. Why not go right to All-Time Zags vs. All Time Blue Devils."

Let me see if I have this right. When the DAWGS and the ZAGS are done with the “pig-tail” play-in game, the winner gets to take on the Champions, THE SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHIEFTAINS:

ELGIN BAYLOR, ROD (The Rifle) DERLINE, PLUMMER LOTT, EDDIE MILES, JAWANN OLDHAM, FRANK (The Magic Man) OLEYNICK, CLINT RICHARDSON, JOHN TRESVANT, CHARLES WILLIAMS, TOM WORKMAN, O’BRIEN (JOHNNY & EDDIE SR. & JR.), LOU WEST & KEITH HARRELL.

Coaches: JOHN CASTELLANI, VINCE CAZZETTTA, BOB BOYD (pre USC), BUCKY BUCKWALTER (pre Sonics), AL BRIGHTMAN.

Wild Cards: JIM WHITAKER (the First American on Everest) who was kicked off the team for being featured on the front page of the Times, saving an avalanche victim while on Ski Patrol DURING THE SEASON; and jazz great LOUIS ARMSTRONG, who hosted the Chief’s defeat of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Transfers: BING CROSBY (quite a fan of the Chiefs, including getting the O’Briens baseball contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates); FR. BOB SPITZER, S.J., PhD., CPA -- who not only presided over the emergence of the ZAGS as a national power, but was present for the passing of the Chieftains from NCAA Division I in 1980. (Something fishy there, I dare ask?); and ELGIN BAYLOR, who spent his Sophomore year at Joe Albertson’s University in Caldwell, Idaho (Idaho is near Spokane).

Famous Non-Conference Wins: Over Texas Western (23-1 during their title year in 1965-66) and over the Harlem Globetrotters (January 21, 1952). How does that compare with the Dawg’s wins over Athletes in Action and BYU Hawaii? And the ZAG’s wins over the Australian All-Stars and the AAU Old Dogs

NCAA Division I Title Games, NBA Title Rings, NBA Title Games, NBA All Star Games, NBA MVP, ABA Titles, ABA Title Games, My wampum is on the Chiefs!!!!

The only risk is if the Dawgs beat the ZAGS, fire HEC EDMUNDSON (The Beef’s Grandfather did just that), and hire back Coach TEX WINTER (the inventor of the Triangle Offense) – who has just as many NBA Title Rings as Phil Jackson for some reason.

Yikes, Nate Robinson and not Q Hall? Frahm? No I'd take John Rillie who won the WCC and the 1st intry into the Dance for the Zags. Frank Burgess and Jim McPhee have to squeeze other players out. There is no Knight or Neilson playing on this offense line up. Brown is correct and you have the right head coach with the cloned assistants. The only way UW of can beat the Zags is if Few sets the inbound and defensive plays.

Detlef Schrempf would slap Adam Morrison around. It would be a rude awaking for the overhyped one. I've never seen anyone get so much publicity just because they were white. Well, except for JJ Redick.
